The Next BlockBuster – Akorri BalancePoint

September 24, 2007

In 2002 , I was fortunate (lucky :) enough to bring VMware to our clients
In 2004, we brought on Equallogic , who is now considered the leader in iSCSI SAN technology and I think we have found something else that is very likely to be huge in this market – it is Akorri’s BalancePoint

The first 2 clients that we showed this to , asked for an evaluation.

BalancePoint just won a ” Best in Show” Award at VMworld…

This product fills the gap between VirtualCenter and various management tools for storage and applications. This tool shows how VMware, applications, storage and I/O interact together in one’s environment now and how they would in the future. Also , it could be a great way to measure how a test-dev environment will behave when moved to production.

This company seems very well run with a lot of smart people in all areas of the company, so Akorri is one to watch in my opinion.

Vizioncore announced Public Beta Release of esxReplicator v2.1, the real-time replication solution for the VMware ESX Server environment

o Fixed Interval Scheduling

§ Using this model, the interval can be calculated from the start of the previous interval, not the end of the replication pass. This will allow customers to set a rigid replication schedule to protect their environment with a minimum of resource contention.

o Failover Testing

§ This will allow users to easily ensure that data is remaining consistent at the destination virtual machine. esxReplicator will disable the networking capabilities of the destination virtual machine and power on the guest. Users will then be able to connect using the Virtual Center console to ensure the data is properly updating at the target

o Manual Failover

§ A manual failover mode has been introduced to allow customers to fail over to a Replicated VM in the event of a disaster.

o Free Space Alerting

§ esxReplicator now monitors Virtual Center to record storage information. Alerts can be configured based on Percent of Free Space or Total Free Space.

o Reporting

§ esxReplicator now includes support for a SQL database to enable enhanced data recording. A Replication History Report provides a complete record of replication jobs

Security Issues and Vmware/Virtualization August 2nd

July 25, 2007

Background
“Like other most-feared exploits, these are theoretical risks rather
than proven real ones. Still, some of the characteristics that make
virtualization so convenient could conceivably make virtualized assets
easier prey than physical ones.

Virtualization creates an invisible network infrastructure that
conventional security products can neither see nor protect. This
exposes data centers and sensitive information to viruses, data theft,
tampering, rogue devices, denial of service attacks and more. It can
also cause regulatory compliance violations, service disruptions or
legal issues. “

If interested in learning more, On Thursday August 2nd – 10am EST we will have a WebX to review “Virtualization and security risks” – the webx and dial in , information can be found below –

Vizioncore and VMware simplify disaster recovery

July 12, 2007

Vizioncore and VMware simplify disaster recovery
By Alex Barrett, News Director
11 Jul 2007 | ServerVirtualization.com
VMware backup and recovery specialist Vizioncore of Buffalo Grove, Ill., has put together a bundle comprising its software plus VMware virtualization. Together, they will enable small and midsized businesses (SMBs) to improve their disaster recovery (DR) posture.

“If they only have a handful of servers, SMBs don’t see the same consolidation benefits from virtualization as larger companies,” said Chris Akerberg, Vizioncore vice president of global sales and marketing. “But one thing they do lack is a solid, repeatable DR strategy.”

By virtualizing their mission-critical systems, then backing them up or replicating them with Vizioncore tools, Akerberg said SMBs can get servers back online quickly without using identical hardware at a remote location or expensive network storage-based replication software.

Vizioncore’s bundle is called Virtual Disaster Recovery (VDR) for SMBs and consists of VMware Infrastructure 3 Starter Edition, which includes the ESX hypervisor and one year of VMware Gold Support as well as Vizioncore’s own esxEssentials. That software, in turn, consists of the following:

* Vizioncore esxRanger Professional: enables scheduled hot backup and recovery of entire VMware virtual machine images;
* Vizioncore esxReplicator: for real-time replication of virtual machines performed within the VMware service console; and
* Vizioncore esxCharter: a VMware ESX real-time and historical monitoring tool.

Akerberg expects that Vizioncore’s channel partners will work with SMBs to identify and virtualize their most mission-critical servers. Once the servers have been virtualized, IT administrators can use esxRanger to schedule an image-level backup of the virtual machine, which in the event of a failure or corruption can be brought up quickly on another ESX host.

For IT shops with more stringent recovery time objectives (RTOs), Vizioncore recommends using esxReplicator to make a real-time continuous copy of a virtual machine to a remote ESX host, or “destination.” This ESX host, Akerberg noted, doesn’t necessarily have to belong to the end customer; “the destination could be at our channel partners’ data center,” he said. “That way our resellers could generate some service revenue.”

Of course, even if you replicate, you should still use esxRanger to perform regular backups, Akerberg cautioned, so that you have a known good point to return to in the event of a data corruption.

The inclusion of esxCharter in the VDR-for-SMBs bundle, meanwhile, “gives SMBs an easy-to-use diagnostic tool to see what’s going on in their environment.”

VDR for SMBs is available immediately from Vizioncore channel partners. With a starting price of $2,275, it “represents a huge value for Vizioncore customers,” Akerberg said. Vizioncore would typically charge about $1,800 for esxEssentials on two CPUs. But here, esxEssentials is being offered for about $600.

P2V disaster recovery on the way
Coming soon, Akerberg said, Vizioncore will offer a disaster recovery solution to customers that want to protect nonvirtualized servers. Working with a third-party technology partner, Vizioncore will integrate an image-level backup tool for physical machines into the esxRanger interface. That capability will be available in the next release of the product, which is scheduled for this August.

Platespin for DR , 750servers , VMware ELAs all the time, and VDI beta from Vmware

June 28, 2007

Platespin seems to be hitting the mark with larger size enterprises with their new workload licensing model. While Converter is great for smaller Windows only deployments, the new pricing model offered by Platespin and the new functionality added to PowerConvert (Block level, etc) is getting them into new clients who are looking for x to x portability…A recent client, just chose Platespin, over Symantec, Acronis, and Vmware to capture images on over 750 servers. The images are being stored on iSCSI disk from Equallogic and the client has the images rotating between several sites. The iSCSI disk compliments existing FC disk.

VMware Product Management is evaluating nominations for their new VDI product.

VMware is capturing a great deal of new business with their ELA program (Enterprise License Agreement) with typical orders ranging from $500,000 to $1 million.

“While almost 70 percent of firms either have or are considering implementing a carbon emissions reduction target over half of IT chiefs have no idea about the energy efficiency of their current IT systems. Moreover, almost 80 percent do not link power costs to IT budgets, while less than five percent of respondents claimed their systems currently boast high levels of energy efficiency.”

Vmware VCB and iSCSI not supported – possible help is !

May 9, 2007

While using VCB w/ iSCSI is not “officially” supported by VMware; some clients are using it and say that it works well when used with esxRangerPro by VizionCore – in some situations when trying to use VCB w/ iSCSI, they will see SCSI Reservation errors and
think it is not working, but most of the time it is.

Feel free to try it out http://vizioncore.com/download.html
and if you run into an issue , you can email
support@vizioncore.com.

Using RangerPRO alone w/ iSCSI as a storage destination is
definitely supported.

VMware confirms they acquired Propero and StorageCraft OEM

May 9, 2007

VMware confirms they acquired Propero; to be used as broker software with VDI ; the acquisition seems a bit curious though – is Propero best of breed in this area? Mixed reviews so far….

“Propero is a leading provider of desktop virtualization software that helps customers reduce the cost and complexity of IT while increasing business flexibility. “

A new player in the P2V, P2P, etc, etc space is StorageCraft – seems like a lot of PowerQuest Corporation – Symantec talent on board with this firm.

Vmotion Issues and different CPU families

May 2, 2007

Here is the link to the vmotion site that explains which family of cpus customers are able to vmotion across. This should help you understand the issue surrounding vmotion.

You can vmotion across different families of cpus but it requires turning off some features in the newer cpus, so they are the same as the older cpus. So customers have to decide how much vmotion is worth to them verses the newer features.

If they purchase cpus that are Core mircoarchitecture based ie Xeon 5100 and 5300 they can vmotion across those cpus.

If they have the older cpus Xeon 2.8ghx or Xeon 3.0ghz they can vmotion across those cpus.

If they have legacy infrastructure Xeon 2.8ghz and want to add Xeon 5100 or 5300 they are unable to vmotion across these cpus. (w/out doing some “kloogy work around”

AMD has the same issue also.

It comes down to the instruction sets on the cpus. The older cpus are SSE3 (Xeon 2.8etc)and the newer ones have SSE4, (xeon 5100 and 5300) you cannot vmotion across differing instruction sets.
